Past Tense Verbs (Pretérito Indefinido)
The pretérito indefinido is used to describe actions completed at a specific point in the past. It is one of the most important tenses in Spanish.
Formation
For regular -AR verbs, remove the infinitive ending and add: -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron.
Yo hablé con mi amigo ayer.
I spoke with my friend yesterday.
-ER and -IR verbs
For -ER and -IR verbs, use: -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron.
Ella comió una manzana.
She ate an apple.
Common irregular verbs
Several common verbs have irregular stems in the past tense. These must be memorized.
Fui al mercado el sábado.
I went to the market on Saturday.
